What is Netflix?

Netflix is a Video On Demand(VOD) service. What it means is that unlike TV Channels and Movie theatres you can watch the Movie/TV show whenever you want (Given that title is available with Netflix or whatever VOD service you are using).

Let me give you a brief of VOD service provider. So what VOD services do is

1. They build a good collection of title.

They might be collecting titles from content producers like Warner Brothers, Sony Pictures etc, and the rights to broadcast it.

Sometimes the VOD service provider will have their own original contents as well.

2. They build Apps to access the titles over the internet

Apps generally mean Mobile Apps(Android and iOS mainly, other platforms like windows, blackberry etc may exist for some service providers). But its never restricted to mobile apps, there will be apps(website or web app) for using the service in Browser from PC or laptop, Apps XBOX, Play Station, Set-top boxes(like Roku, AppleTV, Nexus Player etc)

3. They generate revenue either through a subscription model or through ads which shows in-between content playback.

This kind of services is also known as Over The Top services (OTT). Because they eliminate the traditional way of watching content as well as releasing content.

For example, if you want to watch a particular TV Show or Movie, you have to wait for the time of broadcast and at that time you have to be at home in front of the TV. If you miss that again have to wait for the re-telecast of the same. But these VOD services eliminates all these constraints. You can watch the content on the fly, no matter where you are and what time it is. All you need is a good internet connection. (If the VOD service you use or the content you want to watch need subscription, need to have a valid subscription as well)

For publishers as well, in the traditional way the content producers need to find a telecasting agency, like a TV channel or movie distributor. And need to get a good time slot for the telecasting/broadcasting time etc. But OTT services enables them to release anytime globally, all they need is a VOD service, that they can either build their own or can sell content to other VOD services.
